: : : OK, I saw this commented by Smoky in another post concerning brick
: : : pits...
: : : "Having said all that, I probably have more plans for brick grill
: : : plans than anybody but the Library of Congress."
: : :
: : : I also read
all your other comments regarding them. So I guess
: : : I'm just gonna have to learn the hard way, cause I'm determined
: : : to build one. I've been using a NB Hondo for a few years now and
: : : dealing with it's shortcomings (NB thermomete
r reads high, have
: : : to add fuel at least every 1-2 hours, leaks or sm. fire box make
: : : temp regulation difficult, etc).
: : : I also honestly think (perhaps wrongly) that the brick pit will
: : : look good and actually add value to t
he home (even if it's a flower
: : : planter) if built correctly. Have about 1000 bricks left over from
: : : home construction, so they'll match at least :).
: : : Now, back to your quote, please let me know of some way to get a
: : : look
at some of your plans! My ideas for the pit:
:
: : Geez! Now you tell me! I just bought a #2800 Hondo by NB! Haven't
: : opened the darn thing yet. And it's too late to return. Mark, isn't
: : there something great about this grill? I
was hoping to use it as a
: : cold smoker -- God willing.
: : : A pit with an offset fire box, larger than the Hondo's, but not so
: : : big that I have to cut down a forest every time I fire it up, a
: : : cooking area slightly larger than th
e Hondo's with a top. I was
: : : also planning on adding to one side a smaller open grill with a
: : : gas line for doing the quick burgers and such.
: : : Sorry for the length of this post, but if anyone can help it would
: : : be greatly
appreciated. I have checked the local libraries and
: : : even called Sunset books, the Barbecue (Building?) Book isn't
: : : produced any more and they don't have any. I can't find plans
: : : anywhere! Help!!!
: : : TIA

: Sorry Mark, my post ran smack dab into yours.
No problem, and in answer to your question, sure there's lots
of things I like about the Hondo. In fact, I love it! I've
made some of the best BBQ I've
ever tasted in it. But there
are some areas where it could be improved, which is one of the
things I'm looking at with the brick pit. I'm not building the
brick to replace the Hondo however, I'd be building it even if the
Hondo were perfect
.
Don't take it back. I personally feel it's a great smoker for a
relatively cheap price.
