A spark would have to travel quite a distance to make it from
my firebox to the top of the smoke stack--8-9 feet. It would have
to make it through baffles and food and all sorts of obstacles.
Even with a smaller unit such as my 16x36 OK Joe, I
have never
noticed sparks making it out through the chimney. Occassionally
sparks fly out of the firebox vents though, but they go straight to
the ground and are not caught in an upward airflow such as
would be found coming from the smoke
stack.
If you don't put the cooker on a wood deck, you should be fine.
If you must put it on a deck, make sure you have some sort of
protection--as you should with any cooker.
I wondered about this myself when I got it.
