"It was also in 1978 that the Barbecue Festival began, a suggestion of an Events Committee chaired by Rodney Baber Jr. That first Barbecue Festival was held in an empty lot adjacent to the Orpheum. There were about 16 entrants and Bessie Mae Cathey was winner. To get her $500 prize money, she had to give her recipe for barbecue sauce, which she reluctantly did. It was a Hyde Park Barbeque Sauce."
