There have been several discussions on this forum lately concerning forcing conditions on contest organizers in order to be sanctioned by KCBS. Specifically number of CBJs, unequal contest entry fees, and this one.

It appears the KCBS membership is a tight, loyal group of BBQ enthusiasts. They read the same newsletter, meet and party together at contests, trade emails, and have discussions about issues at meetings and forums like this one.

I would submit that ideas that are hatched in such a closed environment could end up being flawed and possibly hurt the organization more than help it. Believe it or not, there is a world of bbq enthusiasts outside of KCBS. They consist of cooks that enjoy a backyard event every bit as much as a contest. They vastly outnumber your membership. There are also contest organizers who are trying to raise money for whatever reason, usually a charitable cause. Their bread and butter are their sponsors and the cooks that pay to participate in their event, not KCBS. It think Merl made a great point in a thread below when he pointed out that contest organizers have choices other than KCBS.

I understand that KCBS has hired a marketing firm. Have they done any research or surveys to support any of these ideas? Have they conducted any focus groups? They should be making efforts to understand this bbq culture and make appropriate suggestions. If all you are getting from them is a T-shirt design you are being cheated.
