Actually, it would not matter to me whether they put it in box 3 or 7. Reason being that you will want to carry the amount to Schedule C so you can write off expenses against the amount won on the 1099s. And I guarantee, I would have no problems writing off enough expenses against the Schedule C income so that I came down to no net income at the bottom of Schedule C. And if you have no net income on Schedule C, then you stop the question of why there was no SE Tax (read social security and medicare) on your return. Keep in mind that participating at the contests for most people is a hobby and you cannot write off more expenses than income on Schedule C because it is a hobby. As to whether it is a hobby or otherwise for yourself, talk to your accountant.
Also, if you chose to report the income on page 1 of the 1040 under line 21 as Other Income, then you don't have the chance to write off expenses against the income.
