I am doing a stove revamp right now. I've always hated the capacity limitations of a WSM. I got an idea of cutting a hole in the bottom of an oven and dropping in the bottom section of a WSM to provide a controlable, long lasting heat souece for an insulated cook chamber. I measured the oven in my kitchen stove and the bottom of a WSM would fit perfect.

I watched freecycle.org and soon a stove was listed. I went to get the stove and when I got it home I measured it and it turned out to be a "builder's model" which means cheap. The oven was 2" smaller all around so the WSM section would not fit. Undaunted I took a 5 gal enamelware canning pot and pop riveted a damper dealy on it and cut the hole in the bottom of the oven. The fit was pretty good and an application of stove gasket made a great fit. I used a SS round grill basket from Lowe's as a charcoal basket inside the pot.

First fire I filled the basket with lump and started a chimney of lump which I put on top of the charcoal in the basket. It burned too well and the temp got up to 500. I tried a few days later with only a small amout of lit charcoal and the temp got real high again, it just took longer even with the damper closed.

Looking at it closer I saw that the bottom of the oven door has no gasket so air can get into the chamber. Another job for stove gasket and I thnk this thing will work fine. I am already looking for a stove with a larger oven. Even the smaller version will cook a competition no problen as far as capacity.

Pics to follow.
