Been doing an ugly version of that for about 4-5 years.
My high-tech solution involves a pit with 5" thermometer(s), some spot lights under the eves and a well aimed TCP/IP camera with recording abilities. Sat at my PC and watched the pit cook.
I gave the camera away a few months ago, but it worked great when it was setup.
