I fill the charcoal basket full of lump. Add one fist sized piece of wood of your choice and throw on the top. Use propane to ignite the charcoal and turn off when temps hit about 200, then the fire doesn't get out of control and overshoot.

If you don't want to use Lp just keep the last lump you would have added to the basket and put into a chimney, light and when coals are white add to the top of the lump in the basket, before throwing the wood onto the top.

You can always check the basket during your cook and add more wood pieces as the old ones burn away. You could also add wood pellets for a nice smoke that isn't too harsh.

Make sure the door closes tightly with the hinge system. It should be a small effort to get the door closed. A coupe of gentle whacks with a hammer (an ole hickory reps suggestion)on the receiving bracket will tighten the fit. If the door does not seal tightly you will get an air leak that will not allow the cto to do its job.
