If you can't take a class before your first cookoff, you can still judge believe me there are a lot of non CBJs judging contest and you will get a small course on KCBS rules and standards.
If you can't judge then try to volunteer, there are almost always openings for volunteers and its fun with no pressure. The best thing about volunteering is you will get to try the food and that should tell you some of the things you are wanting to know about taste and what you may be up against as a cook.
As far as inviting friends and families over for a bbq, you aren't apt to get good feedback from them, unless most of them are saying bad things, then you had better pay attention, otherwise its just fluff. People will eat most anything and say good things about it if its free.
I am 57 and love hot and spicy food so I would not go by the age bracket. But when judging I have to conceder if it would be to much for the average Joe and score accordingly.
Sweet is ok but I've heard lots of judges at the table proclaim there dislike for sweet bbq.
In short cook it the way you like it and pay attention to detail and if it does not do well make small changes if any. Good luck.
