1) Study any pistures of turn in boxes to see what is typicaly turned in so you arent going in to that aspect of the contest blind. You make the BBQ the way you make the BBQ and you'll be fine there.
2) Pay very close attention to the cooks meeting, and do not be afraid to ask questions. Long time competetors are usually happy to help out the new folks.
3) Most importantly have fun. It is the easiest thing to accomplish at a contest, so make sure you get that part right. Have fun and good luck :)
