I'm painting the pit i'm building using Rustoleum 1000 degree BBQ paint in quarts using a spray gun. I'm wire wheeling the metal down to bare then clean w/acetone or other paint prep solvent then shoot it. I'm going w/1 coat since Rustoleum does not recommend multiple coats, don't know why. As long as you follow the directions on the paint you use, it should be fine for at least a year. After that it might require touch-ups. As for which paint is the best, i honestly don't know but in a year i can tell how Rustoleum is holding up.
I'm using a siphon feed gun since it's a lot of area but if you only have small sections to do then rattle cans would be better. Powder coating would probably be the best but getting it to cure would be a pain w/heat lamps since most places don't have the oven capacity for an entire pit. Hey, it's only paint so if you screw up just strip it down and do it again. Good luck.
