Hi Stevie D. I don't compete either, just a backyard'er. I agree with you--to me traditional BBQ is smoked meat--to me that means heavy hickory smoke. That is the way BBQ got started. If the judges do not like the smoke flavor which comes from wood be it from the real thing or from lump or what ever kind of charcoal then let them move to the grilling over gas side of the world.
Hope your health improves soon, maybe you can have some real BBQ and a double shot!!!!
