I use a weed burner even when lighting the WSM and using the MM... Just pile in your charcoal and wood chunks and hit the center with the burner until you get some coals started. You don't have to go all jet engine on the thing... Just enough to get some coals lit and your on your way.
The paper thing still works as a great backup though when I don't have propane around.
