Very good explanation of the environment in an Egg. I solved the problem by using my Egg for grilling only, and using a WSM for making barbecue, i.e. smoking briskets and butts. The lack of a smoke ring was not my concern, however, as a back-yard cook. The quality of the barbecue, lack of a good rich smoke flavor, was the issue. As reported by some below, there are always ways to work around problems, but I took the easy way out.
