KCBS Judges are specifically told to DISREGARD the smoke ring for the very reason that it can be created so easily via chemicals. You can't tell the difference in color, but you can usually tell the difference by the variations in depth of the smokering as to whether it's natural or chemically enhanced. TenderQuik isn't illegal, as such, but you don't need it.
Don't worry about the smokering. Work more on the taste and tenderness, as they count for more anyway.
What are you cooking on? Type of wood? Charcoal or all wood? I'm willing to bet that there are those here that can help you develop a smoke ring without additional chemicals if you want it.
