Not too sure where you work, but here in California we work many DUI Taskforces and Checkpoints and we feel if we can take one DUI driver off the road, it's more than worth it. It's a special assignment and those that work it chose to and sign up for it, so no one straggles in or leaves early. As for the "picnic" we have dinner to feed everyone who will be working non-stop for 9+ hours, trying to make the streets safer. We eat, then we have briefing and assignments are given out. It's the only meal the officer's will get during the long deployment. If you can't wrap your arms around the concept that DUI driver's are dangerous and people want to work to stop them (I personally was hit while on duty by a DUI driver last July) then perhaps you should wrap your arms around a retirement check.
