I had the same problem. This started after one year. I called the company and they sent me a new one free of charge. When I got the new one, I could see the problem. There is a spring loaded piece that pops up to push the pawl, as you pull the trigger, to engage the rod, It probably was put away wet, or got some marinade down inside the whole, and now the spring loaded piece is seized. When there is no tension on the handles, the push rod is shoved way down in its tube, and dries that way. You can take it apart, clean it good and get the push rod to pop up. Then you can oil it and it should work. But I was very satisfied with their fast response and replacement. It shows they care about the customer.
