I saw the notice in the May 2008 Board Notes in the BullSheet stating that KCBS and the Memphis BBQ Network (MBN) were talking about some alliance. I think the MBN, which was formed in the fall of 2007 to sanction Memphis-style MIM-like contests, wants KCBS to help them with the nuts and bolts (logistics) operation of a sanctioning organization. MIM stated in a letter last fall to cookers and judges that they were no longer sanctioning contests outside of Memphis in May. A group of MIM contest representatives wanted to keep the Memphis style alive so they formed the MBN. My wife and I judged at the first MBN contest in Newton, MS earlier this year. We enjoy the MBN/MIM style contest. We hope KCBS and MBN work out out some good positive alliance. We need Memphis-style contests to survive. By the way, the National BBQ Battle in Washington, DC (June 2008) brings up an interesting issue. In 2007, MIM sanctioned one day of the weekend contest. The other day was a non-sanctioned ancillary contest. My wife and I judged both days of the 2007 contest. In 2008, KCBS is doing the usual four meats on one day of the National BBQ Battle contest. The other day of the weekend is being "sanctioned" by MIM. Are the MIM folks sanctioning this contest outside of Memphis? Originally, the Battle used the MBN logo on its website. I heard earlier this year that MBN dropped out because of a question that the winner of the contest would not get an automatic bit to the MIM contest. The MIM logo is now shown on the Battle site. It seems that the MIM organization is running in parallel with the MBN, at least for big contests like the National BBQ Battle or MIM. BBQ does not need a split like the IndyCar series went through in auto racing over the last decade.
