That piece is the flap that closes when the fan is turned off and keeps air from entering the bottom vent where the fan is connected. It is blown open by the fan when it is on and then flops back down when the fan goes off.
You should be able to reinsert it back into position but you'll need to do it when the adapter disconnected from your WSM. You just need to be sure that you reinsert it correctly so that the flap will close via gravity when the fan is off. The long, flat side is the bottom and the single stair step is the top. The tabs where the flap will pivot would be towards the top and hang down towards the bottom.
