When YankeeBBQ says the only goal is to win, that's pretty close to disrespect in my book. I've never called oven cookers cheating. They're perfectly legal. And I know there are people like yourself out there who do respect the method and the heritage, and who can kick butt on a stick burner and on a thermostatically controlled cooker (witness the original point of this thread), but there are way too many people who would rather buy someone else's work than do some of their own. The same kind of people who show up at an antique car show with a car they had someone else restore for them. Big deal.
This week, I'll be devoting about 40 hours to two Nascar teams, cooking and serving, catching tires and holding a pit sign. And if it were up to me - and to a LOT of people on the inside of the pit wall - stock cars would still be stock cars. Nascar embraced some technology, most of which I think did nothing to improve the sport, and they've pushed away some technology, like IRL and F1. Personally, I think the thermostats are to competition barbecue as IRL and F1 technology is to stock car racing. They have their place in a different race.
