Empanadas, arepas, alcapurrias, bacalaitos, and pastelillos are all deep fried in lard, so I don't think you would get the flavor or necessary greeeeeaziness necessary on a pit.

Jamaican patties on the other hand, are baked- so that could be something that might be translatable to smoking on a pit with good results.
