Early BBQ contests

I would like to get out and judge a couple contests early next year before I start cooking. I just want to get a better idea of what is being turned in. By the time I start competing, it seems like I don't have any time to judge. I saw a contest in mid March in KC call the North KC BBQ Championship on March 13-14. Anyone know anything about it? I am a CBJ, but haven't judged a lot. Do most of the contests in the KC area fill up with judges quickly? I have only judged in IA. I live in West Des Moines now, and any excuse to get to KC is a good one.
