In this world there are many things people do just because others do it. "Slathering" is one of them. Moisten your meat with a small amount of water. The rub will stick just fine, and you will save the mustard for the hot dogs. Your taste will come from your rub, smoke, and fuel source. Mustard does nothing for taste. It is a monkey see, monkey do thing.
