I have heard many nightmares. Mine holds temp real good and for some reason does not use much fuel for being an 8 foot pit. I do preheat the pit with a torch while getting some logs started in the middle area of the fire box then add charcoal from the center outwards.

The doors have always leaked. In my opinion even though fire control seems easy in this smoker it may be even better reducing air gaps which has me thinking these gaps are adding more air to the fire and that additional air coming in through the doors is not wanted.
