Fitting a Gas Hose to my new BBQ

I have just got my new Patton Rumba gas BBQ and it comes with a regulator and hose. Whilst trying to attach the hose to the valve on the BBQ I can't move it far enough up the valve as the hose is too tight a fit. Is there anything I can lubricate it with to make this easier?
