Easiest way to regulate the heat is to use charcoal for fuel and regulate the air. Door has to be airtight. Cut some holes near the bottom and rig some kind of damper. Make a "charcoal basket", fill it up, light it with the "minion method", close the door, and adjust the intake dampers. Need a good thermometer.
Hard way to regulate heat is control the amount of fuel, which is why wood burners have a separate firebox. Some burn teeny tiny logs, which have an automatic feeder and a blower.
