I've tried several other brands lately, but Kingsford is what I normally use. When I notice the smell is when I first pour hot coals on top of a ring of coals in my WSM (the Minion method). It smokes (white smoke) and smells for a half hour or so before it settles down and the smell goes away. Maybe pouring it on top of a hot bed won't do that and I've been concerned unnecessarily.
