Here goes...
When you buy stew meat at the store what cuts of meat are you getting? You don't really know do you? The package would be a mix of trimmings from all different cuts of meat. You could have anything in it. Some of it can be tough and some of it could be tender.

When you buy charcoal either lump or briquettes what are you getting? Sure you're getting hardwood but what kind of hardwood? Different hardwoods have different btu ratings right?

I would think that even with good process controls while manufacturing charcoal products the btu ratings would vary from bag to bag to some "degree". )))To what degree I don't know.
