I would build the square fire box using the same interior deminsions of the round box. Install the insulation on the outside of the fire box and install an outside metal covering to protect the insulation, using thinner material. You will need to extend your intake air vents to the outside of the box. You can get insulation from McMaster-Carr mill supply house.
