EzEd is right, it's best to try things and see what you think. However, as a very experienced WSM user, I doubt that briquettes were the issue. I've used both and prefer briquettes in a WSM because there is less tendency for the temps to spike, especially if you use the Minion method.
Maybe poor quality cheap briquettes could be a problem, but Kingsford or better and you should have no problems.
