Weber Kettle Question

In reading everything on here, I realize that I am a rookie and most topics are way over my head but my Dad always said to go to the "top of the heap" when you need to find out something.

I've got a WSM and a kettle Weber. I've done most of my smoking on the WSM but it looks like I will have to use both this weekend and I need your expert advice.

I use the minion method with the WSM and I want to do the same with the other weber. Is it the same method? Do I just pile a bunch of unlit coals on one side and then dump some lit ones on top of that and bring the temperature to 230? I've heard of people creating a ring around the entire weber but I'm not sure which is better.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
