Gas smoker, like a gas grill can be used as both. Gas assist is one that is controlled by a thermostat or user to keep temps at a certain mark, as the wood slows down on adding heat the thermostat/user kicks in more heat with the gas and vice-versa. Any of the smaller units can be adapted with a larger wood pan to give you a longer wood burn like a coffee can filled with chunks covered with foil with a few holes to keep fare ups from occurring. Adding more wood as needed. If just using gas it's not BBQ in my book. And contrary to what people say, gas does NOT add a funky taste if burning a clean flame. So gas smoker, gas assisted, same thing in my mind.
