An inquiring mind, a lot of experience, and a willingness to learn from others ... never reaching the point where you think you know it all ... but reaching the point where you have thoroughly mastered the art for doing all the things necessary to consistently produce first-class barbecue.

If a person is afraid to ask a question because he thinks he will expose the fact that he doesn't know everything, he's probably not a pitmaster.

If a person uses so much wood he keeps a cloud of white smoke billowing from his cooker, he's probably not a pitmaster.

If a person doesn't know how to select good meat, he's probably not a pitmaster.

If a person cannot adjust from one type of cooker to another pretty fast, he's probably not a pitmaster.

If a person's wife tells him the pork butt he cooked today is not fit to feed to the hogs, he's probably not a pitmaster.

If a person .... (somebody can add more "if" sentences; I'm tired and I don't claim to be a pitmaster).
