Here is my own personal opinion:
A Pitmaster is someone who is in charge of the pit for some type of organization. I think anyone who fits that defintion can have the title.
The value is not in the title of being "pitmaster", but instead the value is in WHERE you served as pitmaster and what that organization has accomplished during your time there. For example, to say you are pitmaster for someplace like Big Bob Gibsons, or Cool Smoke BBQ team really means something; it gives great value to the title because there is a great bbq pedigree there. To say you are pitmaster for some brand new bbq team who hasn't won anything means nothing.
