I had the experience of having a conversation the an officer of the Kansas State Patrol on the way home from Colorado last Sunday. He informed me that ALL vehicles over 10,001 lbs GVW needs to have a DOT number.

If you have a 3/4 ton pickup, it is probably a 10,000 GVW which itself will not need the DOT, but if you hook up even a 2 wheel small trailer, then it's over the limit and you would need DOT.

The very nice lady I just talked to at KHP said that even a private party vehicle will need to do this - even if it is a hobby and you make any money from it.

You may want to do your own research for your own situation. If you are stopped and they determine you need the DOT number and don't have one they can and will put you out of service on the spot.
