You sure can. I've hauled mine all over the country that way. Plan on using a piece of carpet under it. Helps slide and protect it.
I'm trying to find a link to a fellow that did just what you want to do. He had a couple extra receiver tubes welded on the cross tube so it was very stable plugging into two tubes.
