I have used pure oak and pecan mix several times in my W.S.M. You have to have a burn pit to reduce the wood to coals. But it does, in my opinion, make for a more flavorful product. As the others say, keep the exhaust wide open. I have never had a complaint of "Oversmoking" or "Creosoting". HTH
