I have to respectfully disagree over this MSG issue versus alcohol. Of all of the commercially available bbq rubs, some of them or even a lot of them are going to have MSG as an ingredient. And yes, some of us may include MSG in a homemade rub. However, alcohol can much easier be excluded because typically you are not turning in a commercailly produced product in dessert categories. My wife is allergic to pet dander. So, we have no pets, and she declines orreluctantly accepts invitations to events from friends who have indoor pets. Most of the time she opts out. I guess one could start the MSG Free Barbecue society.
