This is spot on!! This is what I, an many others do. Put the next logs you plan on using onto of the fire box. It gets the last bit of moisture out of the wood so it will burn cleaner. Also, as mentioned, air flow is critical - I leave the stack full open and use the air vents and size of fire to control internal temp. I use a small amount of lump every now and then to keep a good coal base. This will help the fire burn cleaner.
Just one note of caution - the wood will start to burn from the hot metal - so put it to the sides of the FB where it's not directly over you fire.
