From my point of view as a judge and competitor, you are taught to judge appearance,taste and tenderness. It wasn't until I competed that I appreciated how much work and experience goes into that turn-in box. I think all judges should have to cook on a team first and then sit down and judge BBQ.
Until you do, you are just somewhat clueless to what went into preparing what you are about to judge. You appreciate it more and are able to judge more fairly and you know what to look for in a whole different way.
