If I had a nickel for every time I've heard a cook say exactly what you're saying.... That's my point, it's so, so subjective. Everyone's palate is different just as everyone's taste at any given time is different and the six samples that are turned in can vary sometimes being wildly different just due to a chunk of spice or sugar that happened to clot on that one sample where the judge decided to bite.
You've been cooking for 10 years so you've had to see tastes inside the tent change over time right?
Your palate tells you one thing but it's influenced by a lot of things prior to you trying it. Take lack of sleep as one example.
I guess where I'm going with this is at some point it's a judging cr@p shoot and to be honest I don't know how I could possibly judge to a "higher standard". I mean what exactly would be a lower one, giving points for just being there?
It either meets/exceeds the criteria and tastes right (to me) or it doesn't or it's somewhere in between and gets scored that way.
