Another thought that I had last night to add to this. They (KCBS) say over and over again this is NOT a sauce competition (emphasis on not) and then goes on to tell judges if it's on there to see if it complements the meat and score accordingly.
Of course it's a sauce competition otherwise cooks wouldn't A. Be concerned about sweet vs savory B. It wouldn't be on there to begin with.
This kind of contradiction as well as a few others can cause real issues when judges try to mentally process what exactly is meant by these contradictions and then coming to their own conclusion which may not be the intended one.
As for "rogue" judges, I've seen a few who should never step into a KCBS tent for one reason or another. Usually because they really don't like one or two of the meats or have pre conceived notions on what sauce or "profile" they love and refuse to judge only on each box's merit.
