Yep. It seems that now-a-days all it takes is to take a cooking class then a judging class.
The cooking class tells you what the finished product should be.
The judging class confirms that.
Or maybe vise-versa.
There should be no question about it. Cook as they tell you to judge, judge it as they tell you to cook. (I know, easier said than done)
I kinda chuckle every time someone gets on and complains about 'bad' judging. What is bad? The class the judge took or the class the cook took?
Seems to me that the best BBQ would be 'People's Choice'.
Maybe there needs to be a 'Fun League' or 'Junior League' or a 'People's Choice League'
How would these come about? Maybe Gardening Centers, Home Improvement Stores, VFW's, Campgrounds, Union Halls, Churches, Town Halls.......
I know my circle of friends and co-workers get together and have a couple contest a year, it is fun as it should be.
I don't want to compete on the national arena, I can't compete on the national arena. So as I think about this, I offer an analogy, Baseball for the pros, softball for the joes.
Just my humble opinion as I have only cooked 3 contests several years ago and in the BBQ belt of OHIO at that....lol (I did get a couple trophies though)
