I disagree. You can't teach taste, and it will always come down to the judge's personal taste. You can show someone how to accordion a slice of brisket, you can tell them that falling off the bone is over-cooked, and you can convince them that the universe revolves around bite-through skin, but hand a perfectly cooked piece of meat with a sweet glaze on it to someone who likes spicy sauce and you will lose points. Whether the judge has been through a class or is a local celebrity who's never had anything beyond a McRib, you're just rolling the dice.
