I've heard that's what some people tell judges, and I've registered my opinion on it. Not that my opinion matters. But if it was just a meat contest, then the cooking method would make no difference and all of our seasonings, from salt and pepper to 20-ingredient rubs to injections, marinades and sauces would be out the window. It's a barbecue contest - you're given the meat and the method: make it taste as best you can. If you think the best flavor is just smoke and meat, go for it. But the stuff that's winning suggests that judges don't agree. People like deep, rich flavors. A "meat contest" suggests meat plus smoke, that's it. Barbecue is much, much more than that.
