I certainly affects the number of judges AVAILABLE. The number of judges SELECTED is determined by the number of teams.
I have a maximum 300 mile radius and usualy shorter. I've only judged two contests where I've had to stay overnight in the last four years. Right now I'm looking at a little car to drive instead of my truck because $3.50 gas is a factor. Also, in my area there appear to be too many judges and I wind up on the "extra" list or not selected quite often in spite of my experience level.
