The only way I would use honey locust as smoking wood is to burn it down to coals first and then use the coals in the smoker. The wood burns hotter than oak, but I do not care for the flavor of the smoke.

PS If your buddy delivers the wood for you, watch out for the thorns. Those thorns are hard to remove from the skin and usually the point will break inside the skin, making removal quite painful.
