A few years ago when I was a judge at the Jack, I was seated next to a very longtime and respected BBQ judge. Before the first tray was delivered, he marked appearance as a nine for all the entries.
"They all look the same," was his response.
Those are the type of judges that need to be retrained or eliminated.
On the whole, I believe judges do a good job and are objective with their evalutaions. Since most teams don't submit samples from the same piece of meat, it's quite possible for one judge to score a 4 and another an 8 from the same container.
Maybe the rules should be changed to require all the entries to be from the same piece of meat or rack of ribs. That might make for interesting results. Instead of getting the best of the best judges would get the best from one.
