I think there should be a stepping stone process to judging. After taking a judging class the newly minted judge will then be allowed to judge X# of backyard bbqs. Perhaps discussion at the table during judging should be encouraged to improve the learning process. This would be followed by a requirement of cooking with a team (backyard or pro). Then perhaps another test, maybe not, but at that time the judge can proceed to judging at pro events. Before becoming a Master judge they should be required to cook once again but with a Pro team (in case they cooked with backyard previously).
