From your reply, you mentioned you would use a charcoal basket from another smoker...I assume that you would put the cherry chunk in the basket along WITH CHARCOAL BRIQUETTES (!)

Not sure as the log lighter in the firebox will be needed...if you keep LIT briquettes at or around the base of the chunk, the chunk will char which is what you want. The charring process actually turns the wood into charcoal...If you get the chunk acting properly, the chunk will actually char and the surface of the chunk will turn white with ash as the wood fibers below the blackened surface of the chunk continue to glow. Just keep pushing lit briquettes in toward the charred section of the chunk and you will keep causing the chunk to smolder, and add other briquettes as necessary to refuel.
